A MORNING OF FIRSTS — FISHING WITH THE ABSHIERS — 50 FISH

WHO I FISHED WITH: This morning I fished with Mr. Chris Abshier of Troy, TX, and his two children, 7-year-old Zephyr, and 5-year-old Tesla.  Mr. De Carson, a family friend, treated the kids to this outdoor adventure.  Although the kids had been boating before and had even made a few attempts at wetting a line, actually catching a few fish eluded them until this morning.

From left:  Zephyr Abshier, his dad, Chris Abshier, and Chris’ daugther, Tesla Abshier, with a pair of white bass taken on downriggers this morning.  The Abshier kids earned TPWD First Fish Awards this morning as each landed the first fish of their lives as our trip began. Both landed small bluegill sunfish and then went on to “big game” by mid morning.

WHAT WE FISHED FOR:  This was a multi-species trip focused on sunfish and white bass.

WHERE WE FISHED: Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir

WHEN WE FISHED:  Saturday morning, 01 September 2018

HOW WE FISHED:  We opened and closed this morning’s trip with sunfishing up shallow, and sandwiched a run at the white bass in the middle.  Our sunfishing involved live bait hung under lightweight slipfloats presented in less than 4 feet of water near hydrilla for bluegill and longear sunfish at 4 distinct locations.  Our white bass fishing took place in two distinct locations and involved presenting Pet Spoons on 3-armed umbrella rigs in ~28-34′ over deeper bottoms.

OBSERVATIONS/NOTES:  The white bass fishing was a bit tough this morning thanks to clear skies and nearly calm winds the entire morning.  The thermocline measurement looked like this today:

15 feet 86.5

20 feet 86.4

25 feet 86.1
