ON-THE-WATER SONAR TRAINING

With over 30 years of sonar experience starting with rotary flashers used for ice fishing in 1984, and progressing through sonar/chartplotter/sidescan/downscan/360 technology to current state-of-the-art Garmin LiveScope Plus technology, I am able to provide you with expert on-the-water sonar training on your boat for high-end Garmin, Humminbird, and Lowrance equipment.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your ~4-hour training session will be broken down into four segments:

  • Leveling your transducer.
  • Comparing and contrasting sonar technologies & understanding coverage area.
  • Adjusting all settings on 2D, down-imaging, side-imaging, 360, & LiveScope (or similar).
  • Searching for fish, bait, natural and manmade forms of cover, and chart use.

How your session flows…

I’ll meet you prior to launching your boat so we can go over several training aids I have developed intended to help you understand how sonar units work so you can have realistic expectations of their performance.

Next, we’ll locate all of your transducers and make sure they are properly aligned. We’ll also determine if your units are networked together and if the networking is taking place properly between units.

After launching, we will go screen by screen through each setting option on your chartplotter, then on your colored sonar, then on your down-imaging, then on your side-imaging, and, finally, on your LiveScope and/or 360 systems.

All along the way we will tweak these settings to maximize your unit’s fish-finding potential. Once each of these technologies is understood and adjusted, we’ll delve into combination screens.

As a final confidence-builder, we’ll seek out submerged automobiles, submerged timber, submerged aquatic vegetation, submerged house foundations, baitfish, and gamefish. We’ll also ensure the units are capable of detecting the descent of a small lure all the way to the bottom in deep water.

Here is an unsolicited comment from one of my students …

Bob,

I want to let you know how very impressed I was with your sonar training. It was so comprehensive. Your attention to detail is amazing. As I told you at the end of my session, I have never learned so much in a few hours. I am confident that I can now go out and find fish with my electronics with the tools you have given me. I know it will take some practice on my part, but I now know what to look for. I would highly recommend this training to anyone who wants to understand their electronics and to learn how to find fish. It was money so well spent. Thank you again for a great learning experience. I intend to book a fishing trip soon to further my learning. When you spend a couple thousand bucks on electronics, it’s a no-brainer to spend less than $200 to learn how to use it. Have a great day.

Something to Consider on Multi-Student Sessions

Because even the largest sonar screens are still only 12-16 inches in size, and because the “sunlight-readable” characteristic of these screens makes viewing sonar from an angle somewhat difficult, please think through whether you desire to have a second student aboard with you trying to view the sonar screen as you and I are trying to do the same. Specifically consider where that additional student will comfortably sit for ~4 hours.
