FATHER & SON PAIR UP FOR A 112-FISH CATCH ON LAKE BELTON

WHO I FISHED WITH: This morning, Saturday, 11 November, I fished with returning father and son, team Kelly and Aaron Baggett. Kelly is a retired educator residing in the Lubbock area, and Asron is an associate professor on staff at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

I always enjoy fishing with these fellows, partly, because like me, Aaron is a big fan of smoked meat. So, we always get to compare notes on which good barbecue joints we’ve hit since we saw one another the last time, and he also brings me up to speed on what DIY meat projects he has tackled.

Here’s how the fishing went…

WHERE WE FISHED: Lake Belton

WHEN WE FISHED:  Saturday, 11 November 2023

HOW WE FISHED:

Although the fishing was still very, very good this morning, it did not rise to the level of crazy like yesterday’s trip did while the north wind was still increasing in velocity.

The north winds died down overnight Friday into this morning, and although they blew all morning, it was a steady 9-10 mph wind, well below the 15 mph peak yesterday.

We caught fish consistently for the entire four hours of this morning’s trip. The span of time from 9:45 to 10:45 was the best of the best for us. During this time, the skies were as bright as they would get while the wind was still blowing. As the wind slacked off around 10:50, the bite died down with it.

By this time, Kelly and Aaron had landed 112 fish including 1 short hybrid striped bass, 1 largemouth bass, and 110 white bass.

We had to do a bit more running this morning, as the fish only stayed fired up for short whiles each time we found them, and, when we found them, they became interested enough to chase and strike, but they never really caught on fire with multiple fish chasing every retrieve every time as was the case earlier in the week as the weather began to change.

Of these 112 fish, 105 came on the white, 5/8 ounce Bladed Hazy Eye Slab, with the balance coming on the MAL Heavy with chartreuse tail.  When a large school of white bass hung out to the port side of our boat for quite some time as seen on side-imaging I had my crew redirect their efforts horizontally only as long as the fish stayed visible on sonar..

Otherwise, we fished the Bladed Hazy Eye Slab  with a smoking tactic for the balance of our fish as explained in this video…

TALLY: 112 fish caught and released.
